Early Life and Education
Hu Fuming was born in July 1935 in China. He embarked on his educational journey by enrolling in journalism studies at Peking University in September 1955. Following this, in 1956, he entered the Philosophy Research Class at Renmin University of China, where he began to delve into the realm of philosophy. His dedication and academic prowess paved the way for a promising future.
Upon completing his studies, Hu Fuming graduated in 1962 and subsequently embarked on a career in academia.
Academic and Political Career
Hu Fuming’s academic journey led him to a teaching position at the Political Department of Nanjing University, which later became the Department of Philosophy. His role as an educator allowed him to impart knowledge and inspire future generations of scholars.
One of the pivotal moments in his career came on May 11, 1978, when he authored an essay titled “Practice is the Sole Criterion for Testing Truth.” This essay gained significant attention and underwent several revisions. Its publication was particularly noteworthy during the Boluan Fanzheng era, highlighting the importance of practicality and truth in the context of political and philosophical discourse.
In November 1982, Hu Fuming assumed the position of Deputy Minister of the Propaganda Department of the CPC Jiangsu Provincial Committee. He further ascended in the political arena when he was appointed as the Minister of the same department in 1985. His leadership and contributions in this role were instrumental in shaping public discourse and political communication.
In 1987, he took on the responsibility of vice chairman of the Jiangsu Provincial Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, showcasing his commitment to serving the people and contributing to the betterment of society.
Recognition and Legacy
Hu Fuming’s dedication and achievements were duly recognized, and on December 18, 2018, he was bestowed with the prestigious title of “Pioneer of Reform.” This recognition underscored his significant role in driving reforms and progress in China.

Tragically, Hu Fuming’s life was cut short by the global COVID-19 pandemic. On January 2, 2023, he passed away at the age of 87, leaving behind a legacy of scholarly excellence and dedicated public service.
