In 2013, he received a sobering diagnosis of cardiomyopathy and Wernicke encephalopathy, conditions often linked to prolonged alcohol abuse. These health issues began to hinder his ability to perform at his best, eventually leading to his retirement from Smash Mouth.

On September 3, 2023, Harwell’s representative shared the heartbreaking news that he was in hospice care, facing the final stages of chronic liver failure. The world waited anxiously for updates, but sadly, on September 4, 2023, Harwell passed away at the age of 56 in his home in Boise, Idaho.
In a touching tribute, the band’s manager, Robert Hayes, celebrated Harwell’s vibrant spirit and larger-than-life presence, saying, “Steve lived a 100% full-throttle life. Burning brightly across the universe before burning out.”
